System Atlas

Attribution Guide

How to cite System Atlas, and the terms and credit line of every upstream source.

Version

Draft for legal review · Version 2026-11-03. Written in plain language by the System Atlas team; it is not final and will be replaced by the reviewed text.

1.How to cite System Atlas

Short form, under a chart or a quotation: "Source: System Atlas (systematlas.org)".

Long form, in a report or paper: "System Atlas, <dataset> dataset (<date generated>). systematlas.org/data. Used under the System Atlas Data Licence, <version>." The /data page and the manifest give the dataset name and date; the licence field gives the version.

Online, link the words System Atlas to systematlas.org, or to the organization's page when you cite one organization.

2.Keep the source of each row

Rows from a source that requires attribution carry its credit line in their attribution column (files) or field (API). When you publish anything drawn from such rows, show that credit line next to ours. Do not remove it from data you pass on within your licence.

3.Upstream sources

Public domain and CC0 sources need no credit by their own terms; System Atlas's compilation around them is still under the Data Licence.
